Key Responsibilities of the Internal Auditor
Audit Planning and Execution
- Contribute to the development and implementation of annual audit plans based on comprehensive risk assessments, industry standards, and regulatory requirements
- Execute financial, operational, and compliance audits to evaluate the effectiveness of internal controls and adherence to company policies and procedures
- Conduct audits in accordance with established audit methodology and alignment with local and international standards including IIA and IPPF
- Perform risk-based audits with particular focus on critical areas such as revenue leakages, inventory management, procurement processes, and regulatory compliance
Risk Assessment and Internal Control Evaluation
- Assess the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls and operational processes to identify weaknesses and potential risk exposures
- Develop and provide actionable recommendations to mitigate identified risks, enhance operational efficiency, and ensure regulatory compliance with bodies including NPA, NUPRC, NMDPRA, and NIMASA
- Monitor and track key performance indicators related to risk management and internal control effectiveness
Reporting and Communication
- Prepare comprehensive audit reports that clearly present findings, identified risks, and strategic recommendations for management and stakeholders
- Communicate audit results and provide practical, actionable recommendations to management in clear and concise formats
- Conduct follow-up reviews to verify implementation of audit recommendations and track management’s corrective actions
Compliance and Regulatory Audits
- Ensure organizational adherence to Nigerian laws and regulations governing the downstream oil and gas sector
- Perform compliance audits related to the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and other industry-specific regulations
- Serve as liaison with regulatory authorities during audit exercises and ensure all statutory requirements are satisfied
Fraud Detection and Prevention
- Identify, investigate, and report instances of fraud, corruption, and financial mismanagement
- Design and implement internal controls to prevent fraudulent activities and ensure transparency in financial transactions and reporting
- Provide expert guidance to management on fraud risk management strategies and mitigation approaches
Continuous Improvement and Best Practices
- Maintain current knowledge of industry trends, audit best practices, and regulatory changes within the oil and gas sector
- Identify and recommend process improvements to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of internal audit activities
- Support training and capacity building initiatives for internal audit staff and other organizational stakeholders
Collaboration and Stakeholder Management
- Collaborate effectively with various departments including Finance, Operations, Procurement, and Legal to ensure alignment with audit objectives
- Act as primary point of contact for external auditors, regulators, and third parties during audit exercises and investigations
- Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement throughout the organization

Professional Certifications
Mandatory:
