Makinde Doubles Oyo Teachers, Creates 4 New Education Zones – TESCOM

Oyo State has seen a major boost in its education workforce and structure under Governor Seyi Makinde. According to the Chairperson of the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mrs. Olubukola Oladipo, staff strength in public secondary schools rose from 13,730 in 2019 to 26,436 in 2024.

Speaking at the Omituntun 2.0 Inter-Ministerial Briefing, Oladipo noted that 10,500 teaching and non-teaching staff were recruited in Makinde’s second term alone. She also announced the creation of four new educational zones—bringing the total to ten—for better school administration. The new zones include Ibadan Zones I–IV, Oyo, Ogbomoso, Kishi, Saki, Eruwa, and Iseyin.

To enhance staff welfare, TESCOM introduced a Pension and Post-Service Directorate, approved car loans through e-payment to reduce travel stress, and completed promotion exercises from 2017 to 2024.

In addition, 2,000 seconded teachers from SUBEB were fully integrated into TESCOM, while 7,500 teachers and 3,000 non-teaching staff were recently recruited to improve student academic performance. Training programs for all 695 school principals are also in the pipeline to update them with modern management skills.

Governor Makinde has also approved key welfare measures, including timely salary payments, leave bonuses, 13th-month salaries, and the elevation of teaching staff to Grade Level 17.

Oladipo commended the governor’s continued support and commitment to education in the state.
